Read Only on Network shares

User has full access to a network folder (NTFS) where work
is stored mostly word docs. Permissions are set correctly
but when user opens a doc it comes up as a read only doc.
Close / open not read only. Close / open not read only.
Open /close ready only. Stripped and re-did permissions,
deleted / recreated user, nothing works to make it
consistent

Look at the properties of the share you created, and make
sure that it is open for full access. (Explorer / Right-click
shared folder / click Sharing / Security).
 
It sounds like you are confusing the permissions on
"network shares" with those on an "NTFS volume,
files and directories."

Users must have desired level ON BOTH to accomplish
desired tasks.
