Read-only .doc causes "locked for editing" message

When another user opens a .doc file read-only on a UNC share, if I try to
open the file, it says the file is locked for editing by me. I cannot open
the file for editing until the other user closes her read-only copy. We are
both using Word 2007. This problem did not occur with Word 2003.

I have this same question but see nobody has answered, I don't think a reply
bumps it to the top so I am going to post it again.

Your reply did indeed bump it to the top. I haven't been on a network
since 1991, but back then, if QuarkXpress 1 was running on one of our
two computers, it couldn't be opened on the other one unless we
unplugged the cable that connected the two, so yes, protection schemes
can look at all the computers on a network.

The problem continues, but I have a little new info: I looked at open files
on the server and saw that a temporary document had been created starting
with "~" and that the Word document was marked read-write. Again, the user
had opened the file read-only, so this makes no sense. I did a fresh check
on both support.microsoft.com and groups.google.com, and did not find an
answer to this problem.
