Blank "read only" documents

I have a user with Office 97 that tries to open several docs with passwords
applied. Normally he clicks read only, but now when he does that, the screen
stays blank and the doc does not open, however, if he supplies the password,
the doc opens fine. I need the read only option to work correctly. I've
reinstalled and tried the /unregserver /regserver, but no luck there.
Haven't found anything useful on the net either. Suggestions?

I removed the entire Suite and reinstalled Office Pro 97. Then I applied
all Service Packs in one sitting, with reboots, and everythings operates as
it should. I'm sure the service packs were installed before, but started
over anyway.

Hi MacLeod,

With Office 97, which still used AcmeSetup rather than MS Installer, the updates weren't cached by the system (even though
'Help=About' might indicate they were 'ther' and they would generally need to be reapplied in this scenario, even in scenarios where
you were just changing installed feature sets. It was one of the reasons the MS Office 97 was issued with 'Service Release'
replacement disk versions as well as Service Release update 'patches'. A Service Release product CD (includes all updates to a
given point as part of the installation image, where Service Packs are patch-up and remove/replace-file updates.
