Read messages turn invisible!

T

TOP

I have one user who said his entire inbox disappeared. After I spent some
time looking for a virus, he said that new mail coming in was also
disappearing if he clicked into another folder (like sent items) and back
into the inbox.

After looking some more for a virus, I decided to set up a rule to copy all
incoming mail to a folder called inbox2. I assumed that the messages would
continue to disappear from the inbox due to this mysterious virus, but at
least he'd have the emails. I had one unopened test message in his inbox and
ran the rule. Lo and behold, all of his previous messages (700 of them)
appeared in Inbox2. So they're in the inbox, but they're invisible. Any
clues what causes this, and how to fix it?

Hi,

A common problem with users reporting disappearing emails has to do with a filter being set. In this specific instance, their Inbox might be set to only display unread messages.

Try clicking on View > Arrange By > Current View and select Messages.

That was it. He swears he wasn't messing around in view, but it was set to
unread messages only. Thanks for the help, guys/gals.
