Hi Patrick,

What you listed would be different variants of the same file format, not a different format (i.e. the details are evolving but the
structure is pretty much the same). It's similar to the RTF spec in that regard in that it changes with each version of Word as
well and to the .doc, etc file formats. New versions of each app may have features not backwards compatible but the file format is
considered to be 'the same'. With betas, it's often the forward (between beta-test versions) compatability that gets to be the
issue.

It would have been nice if MS's 'error' dialogs in TR2 were looking at the headers in the file to be a bit more specific on what
they're seeing as the problem. It might also be an interesting exercise to see if the claims on being able to recover files when
one part breaks from the .---x (zipped) contents would be doable in trying to save the content from a pre B2TR file by moving them
to a new .---x structure.

Definitely different. Files created in B1 and B1TR don't open in B2TR
anymore, they actually produce a corrupt file error message. B2TR uses
the XML file formats according to the Ecma draft v1.4, B2 used 1.3. B1TR
and B1 were earlier versions.

Just to finish up this discussion. The only related "issue" that affects
all users is the "Building Blocks.dotx" file. B2TR setup doesn't replace
this file, as it is considered a user file. In order to get the newest
content for all galleries though, this file needs to be replaced with
its B2TR version. If a user modified the building blocks in B2 (e.g.
galleries), this shouldn't be done though as those modifications will be
lost in the process.
In order to replace the file, close Word and use Start, Run, type
"%appdata%\Microsoft\Document Building Blocks" and delete the file
"Building Blocks.dotx" there. Word will recreate the file automatically
once you open it again and drop-down a gallery.

Just a suggestion - I would have thought that re-registering the dll from its
current default location would have worked as well, and might make things
simpler if you need to uninstall that printer later?

The B2TR patch has some nasty surprises for users in store. The most
important
one being that Word 2007 Beta 2 files saved in the new file formats
(extensions docx, docm, etc) might not open at all once B2TR has
been installed.
Excel files in the file formats (extensions xlsx, xlsm, etc) saved
in B2 should open in B2TR. PowerPoint files saved in B2 in the new
file formats (extensions pptx, pptm, etc) seem to at least open,
but seem to have issues
with font size, text placement, and other minor issues.
Before installing B2TR therefore, you should save all your files in
the 97-2003 file formats. That means, save all your docx files as
doc (Word), all
your xslx files as xls (Excel) and all your pptx files as ppt
(PowerPoint).
There are a host of other issues you might encounter. I am keeping a
running
list that I will update constantly over the next few days at
http://pschmid.net/blog/2006/09/14/43. I highly suggest to read it
before installing B2TR.

Double Left Click on one of the tabs to hide the ribbon. After
doing that, a left click on one of the tabs will display the ribbon
for that tab.

Thanks for the hint, Doug. Had already detected that.
May it's just initial disliking of something dramatically new.

But think the good old ToolBars had there merits and I do not
understand that there is no "compatibilty mode".
I can easily imagine waht will break loose in our offices when the
secretaries and assistents will have to face to new way ...

Billions of workhours, I estimate, to be billed to Seattle ...

I think the majority of those who actually knew the applications have
all asked the same thing. I know I absolutely hated it at first. While
the old toolbars have their merits, the new functionally that has been
integrated simply can not be duplicated with the old toolbars.

I don't know if you found this, but Help contains links to interactive
reference guides for the applications. If you know where a favorite
command was located in the Microsoft Office 2003 application, navigate
to the command using the old interface and the interactive command
reference guide will provide information to its new location in a
screen tip. If you need more help, clicking the command will animate
the location in the 2007 Microsoft Office application.

Thanks Patrick, this is just the kind of simple instructions which I have
been searching for all over the Vista and Office websites incl. the "Office
Discussion Groups" and "Windows Vista Newsgroups". MS ought to make this
information available directly on the download pages.

I was just about to do an update from Vista B2 to Vista RC1 and then do the
update from Office B2 to Office B2TR; maybe that would work too, but now I'm
definitely going to do the Office update before the Vista update.

If you are using Symantec/Norton AntiVirus, try disabling the
Office Plugin that comes with it (but don't disable Norton

Unfortunately I didn't see this message before loading B2TR. Most of my
files were created using office 2000 (xls/doc format) but recently installed
Norton IS 2006. I have been enjoying B2 since July without obvious problems,
so I also have a few files with docx/xlsx format. So far I have been unable
to find a single file that will open after installing B2TR not even those
created since the installation. Nor will Windows let me restore to a point
prior to installing B2TR. Any advice on how I can get my files back?

Disable the Office anti-virus plugin from Norton and you should be fine.
