READ BEFORE INSTALLING OFFICE 2007 B2TR

The B2TR patch has some nasty surprises for users in store. The most
important one being that Word 2007 Beta 2 files saved in the new file
formats (extensions docx, docm, etc) might not open at all once B2TR has
been installed.
Excel files in the file formats (extensions xlsx, xlsm, etc) saved in B2
should open in B2TR. PowerPoint files saved in B2 in the new file
formats (extensions pptx, pptm, etc) seem to at least open, but seem to
have issues with font size, text placement, and other minor issues.
Before installing B2TR therefore, you should save all your files in the
97-2003 file formats. That means, save all your docx files as doc
(Word), all your xslx files as xls (Excel) and all your pptx files as
ppt (PowerPoint).
There are a host of other issues you might encounter. I am keeping a
running list that I will update constantly over the next few days at
http://pschmid.net/blog/2006/09/14/43. I highly suggest to read it
before installing B2TR.

I'd be rather helpless as I was careless enough to make a total move
to the Beta versions of all of Office.

I hope I won't have to run a System Recovery tommorow morning ...

As you just made the move right now, you won't be in much trouble.
People who have been using Beta 2 for a while and now got B2TR are the
ones experiencing most issues.

Funny, I seem to be able to open all of my Beta 2 Word files, saved in the
new Word format, without issue.

About 6 documents of my 20 or so in docx format came up with a corrupt
error message. Thankfully my document called "Dissertation.docx" wasn't
among them

I am still trying to get a definite answer from the Word and PPT teams
on these file format issues. So far, only the Excel team has provided a
definite answer (there shouldn't be any issues with Excel). The best
information available right now from Microsoft says that Word & PPT
probably have issues.

You may remember that I had some issue with OL2007 - most of these
are now resolved.

When I print, I still get warnings about Prop Res DLL not loaded,
but it prints ok.

The Editor seems much improved - as does the rest of Office 2007.

D**n, I didn't see your post until AFTER I installed B2TR. I've been using
Office 2007 beta 2 for 3+ months, all my Word docs are in B2's .docx format,
and losing them is not acceptable. (An aggressive, itchy pox upon the Word
team for putting us in this situation.)

It sounds like I need to completely uninstall Office 2007, reinstall Office
2007 B2 (and NOT the TR), open each .docx file and Save As .doc. Is that
correct?

Did you ever bother to read all the warnings about not running this in
production?

And yes, that is indeed the way to recover the items that have issues.

XP
I am a little concerned ....
How is it?

A clean install of Vista, Office 2007 BETA 2 and then the TR is possible
too.

I downloaded the technical refresh for Beta 2 but cannot find instructions
for installing it, other than the cryptic statement that "this is not a
one-click install." My attempts to install through the normal means give
me options to "repair" or "add new components" etc. but not to update. Where
are installation instructions. Thanks, HMR

Do you have problems opening Word docs files? You only need to do the
steps you outlined if you are having any problems.

What you downloaded 2 weeks ago was the same thing you downloaded months
ago, namely Beta 2. This is an actual new build of Office 2007.
In Microsoft's naming scheme, B2TR is essentially Beta 3 (or if you are
anal, Beta 4, as there has been a B1, B1TR, B2 and now a B2TR).
