Can I read and copy FAT32 files using a NTFS drive ? The
files were burned to CD-R using windows XP Pro formated
with the FAT32. Now I have re-formated to NTFS and re-
installed XP Pro and want copy some saved data files from
that FAT32 made CD-R, to my hard drive, is this possible ?

First - the format of the drive does not matter, it is the OS that can read
or not read certain formatting. Win9x os's only read fat, fat16, fat32. Win
NT based os's can read ntfs and all fat formats.
Second - cd-r are another whole different format. Not fat32 or ntfs. It does
not matter what the hard drive is formatted in, a cd-r is formated in cd-r
format. If the cd was burned as a data cd it should work in any windows
os/computer.

Ok, thanks, and is the best way to do this by right
clicking the CD-ROM drive and select explore, or just
copy, or send to: to copy to another media ? This is to
get files from the CD-ROM to the hard drive. thanks, Jim

What file systems were being used by the computer that created the
CD-R makes no difference at all. All that matters is if you have the
hardware and software required to read it. What file system the hard
drives in the reading system use is not relevant.

In other words, YES it is possible.

A CD has its own file system. Yes, you can copy the files from a CD back to
the hard drive. May need to remove the Read Only attribute on some of them
before they can be used or edited.

Where did you get that idea? If you have one volume formatted NTFS and
another formatted FAT32, you can copy files back and forth between them all
day. What you can't do is convert an NTFS volume to FAT32 while keeping the
data it contains intact without a program like Partition Magic.

Not true. You can move files on fat and ntfs drives all day, back and forth,
anyway you want. It's the os that reads the file system. Win9x os's can't
see a ntfs drive, thats about it.

Sorry, but this is completely wrong. If you have an operating
system that is NTFS-aware (such as Windows XP) you can move and
copy NTFS, FAT32, FAT16, and FAT12 files in any and all
combinations.

How the partition that XP is on is formatted is not relevant. It is not
the FAT 32 or NTFS drive doing the writing or reading, it is XP, which
can work happily with any mix of partition types. The files themselves
are no different - any more than letters are different from being stored
in suspended folders or Box files

Wrong. You can move them freely either way, provided you are using the
XP system on the machine

JJANSON IBM In response to the question of copying file types the proper
statement would be that you can copy from NTFS to FAT partion, however
any attribute on the file ie read-only, read/write or other ntfs file
attributes would be stripped off when file is moved to the fat partion.

Furthermore, you can convert Fat partions to NTFS but not NTFS to FAT.
