I am upgrading to a laptop, and selling my pc on to a family member. I need
to restore the pc to as near to its original setting as possible, ie remove
all programs, files, remove all email and internet settings, etc etc that I
have added, and get it running lean and mean.

What's the best way to do this? If I use a 'restore point' I can only go
back to Aug 05, which is nowhere near far enough back bearing in mind the pc
is a couple of years old.

Thanks

Use the 'recovery' media supplied with your laptop.. or read the part of the
manual that deals with the 'challenge' of re-installing Windows after a
serious error..

You can also delete your present user account(if is not administrator). That
will take all your My document information with favorites, cache files, etc.
