when the new motherboard was installed windows xp was re-installed by the
computer shop and that re-installation has caused the problem with
downloading updates and the file types in save as boxes

If you have a genuine MS win cd run a repair installation, and install the
chipset & other drivers that were supplied on the mobo cd.
However if you have an OEM or win recovery cd unless the mobo is identical
it may not work.

Bottom line; Take it back to the PC shop; it aint working
