re-installing XP pro

I use XP pro sp1. I have some minor issues. One being unable to install
sp2. I maintain my computer with antivirus, antispy and adware programs.
There may be some registry issues that give me an access denied message on
installing sp2 as well as only McAfree AV on one administrator account.
What problems can I cause if I re-install Windows XP pro with sp1a from my
OEM disc from Dell?
Would if fix any problems that may have developed over the 14 months since I
purchased the computer? Does re-installing Windows erase all my program and
data files?

Whoa, cowboy! Start by posting the exact error messages you're getting when
attempting to (1) install SP2 and (2) [when doing something with] McAfee
VirusScan "in one administrator account".

What problems "have developed over the 14 months since [you] purchased the
computer" from Dell? Have you contacted Dell Support about these problems?
What make/model Dell is it?
