Re-installing Windows XP

I am helping a friend with a computer problem. She is definitely connected
to the Internet (the kids can use AOL and Yahoo instant messengers) but when
clicking on IE she gets a message saying IE has encountered a problem and
needs to shut down. I talked with Dell and with MicroSoft and was told there
must be a glitch in the software and to re-install Windows. When I insert
the original WindowsXP disc, I get a message saying it cannot continue
because the Win version on the disc is older than the one on the computer.
To her knowledge it is the original version on the system although she did
have it repaired in a shop at one time.
How do I bypass this a continue with the Windosw installation. I t says I
can boot from the Windows CD but I can't do that. Can anyone offer a
suggestion???

Thanks.............

Youre going about "repair xp" or "reinstall xp" the wrong way.Even so the
version is giving you the correct answer because SP2 is probably installed
along with updates, the cd might not even have SP1 installed.Back to the
problem, install xp cd,exit the info screen, restart computer, boot to xp cd
(you
may need to adjust for this in the BIOS-boot drive priority or
similiar),once at
xp cd boot screen, select install xp,either repair this copy or new
installation.
The repair will delete all updates, the rest stays intact....

If trying to perform a CLEAN install..
Boot from the CD - you'll have to change the BIOS (hardware/system
settings - before any OS is loaded) to do that.

If trying to perform a repair install (where you do not lose anything like
data or installed applications)..

OMG .... I dont think a WHOLE REINSTALATION is needed here.
Its the IE which is Courrupt..n not the operating system. U CAn reinstall IS
by going to 1386 folder in "C" Drive. thn Find "IE" ... with no extensions...
right click .. install.... if prompted ... put the original XP CD in the top
Drive. n EUREKA.... u are ready to use... IE ..AGAIN.

Perhaps not - but it *is* what the OP asked for and what the DELL technician
on the phone told her to do.

While it is unlikely any actual technician would tell her this - it is the
first response of lower-end Dell warranty tech calls in my experience.
