re-installing IE5.5 on Windows 2000

IE6.0 SP1 got pretty messed up and I had to remove it.
Following the MS documentation, I tried to uninstalling from command prompt
here:

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IE Uninstall\w2excp.exe /u

Unistallation gave an error: "Setup failed to uninstall properly."
I guess this is because setup couldn't revert to the previous version, IE
5.5 SP2.

After that, I tried changing registry value:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Active Setup \ Installed
Components \
{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}\IsInstalled
I Changed value from 1 to 0, after which tried installin ie6setup.exe = ie6
with SP1, downloaded from Microsoft.

At this point, I noticed the regkey above mentioned above was for IE6 in
Windows XP,
however this part seemed to be working fine.

Do I have any hope left, Can I somehow force to install IE55 over what's
left from this existing, how?

Thank's for your advice, re-installing OS is not an option.

IE6 uninstaller is this file w2kexcp.exe.
Is there a way to tell this program where it should copy IE55 files from?

thnx
