How do you re-install Iexplorer 6 (MS Viewer files corrupt?)

R

Ralph Innes

Hi there, Group!

I hope someone can help me with this.

The symptom:

Running Win98SE and Eudora Pro 5.2
No problems since day 1.
Then I ran into a hailstorm of pop-ups on the internet with
IExplorer6.
Thereafter, Eudora would error-up (Invalid Page Fault in module
MSHTML.DLL) and crash.
Ran a VIRUS CHECK - clean.

What I've done:

In Eudora, Tools>>Options>>Viewing Mail, UNchecking "Use Microsoft's
Viewer" allows Eudora to run, and view mail. (Eudora apparently uses
this component of IExplorer to render HTML.)
I've removed & installed Eudora twice, to different locations - no go.
I've TRIED to reinstall IExplorer, but it does little, other than
install Outlook Express, which I subsequently uninstall.
I have downloaded all the IExplore CAB files (not just the 480KB
Installer) to my hard drive.
I used the following procedure to edit the Registry:
Start>>Run>>Regedit
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active
Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
In the right pane doubleclicked "IsInstalled"
Changed the Value Data:(from 1 to 0], OK and EXIT.
Then ran the Installer
It was over in a flash, and apparent that nothing had been
re-installed (Except Outlook Express)
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active
Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
IsInstalled Value Data: 0 (after reboot)

What am I missing?

How do I get IExplorer to re-install?

(The Registry-Editing procedure I used was targeted at WinXP, in the
Web article I found. I couldn't find anything Win98SE-specific in my
Googling.)

My life WILL go on without the ability to view HTML in Eudora, but I'd
like to fix it, just the same. After all, The Chicago Cubs didn't
make it into the World Series, and I didn't slash my wrists. Yet.

Any insight would be much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance,

- Ralph

I only have MSHTML.DLL installed in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ and it is
Version 6.00.2800.1106

When Eudora crashes, and I check details, it references MSHTML.DLL

Closing that dialog box, brings up a 2nd that references MFC42.DLL and
its Version number is 6.00.8665.0

I followed the link you'd provided (many thanks), and a link from that
page, ultimately to Adaware. I downloaded and ran the latest flavor
of Adaware, and it found 248 "objects", which I quarantined. I then
rebooted, and ran Adaware again, to ensure that no lurking program
would reinstall itself. Scanned cleanly.

However, the problem still persists in Eudora.

Perhaps the Spyware area is worth my exploring more, and I'll do so.

Many thanks for your help.

Will let you know if & how I slay this dragon.

A new definition table for Adaware came out on the 25 Oct. Hope you have the
latest.

If still interested if you are clean,

Go to http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads.php#det
Download "Hijack This!" [freeware] or download direct (below):
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip

If you get a 404 error or Access denied, try:
http://216.180.252.218/~spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/hijackthis.zip

Unzip, double-click "HijackThis.exe" and Press "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button.
Click: "Save Log" (generates "hijackthis.log")

Next, HijackThis | Config [button] | Misc Tools [button]
Click: Generate StartupList log [button] (generates "startuplist.txt")

This one came out just after I'd run Adaware. I ran it with this new
definition table, and quarantined another 4. Insidious stuff!

I've pasted the contents of the 2 files in the forum as you suggested.
Hope they make sense.

I want to thank you for all the trouble & effort you've put in on this
"project." The world needs a few more like you.

Many thanks, again.
