Hi, I have had a nightmare with MacAfee Internet Security on my laptop. I
eventually found when I started the computer I was getting an error "cant
load MacAfee due to lack of resources"
I tried to uninstall from add remove programme, (and in safe mode) but
it would not allow removal.
I am now trying to reinstall Windows.
I have firstly, tried to repair the installed version of windows, this
went through all the coping of files etc, but then ended up in a page fault
error. I then tried to install a new Windows, but it gets as far as
"examining 56000mb Disk 0 at Id 0 on Bus 0 on atpi..." This is the blue
screen, with the info along the bottom of the screen. What do I need to do
to get past this stage?
The laptop is a P4 GHz, 512 mb, of ram with XP pro.
At my wits end!

It sounds like it might be a hardware problem with the drive. I'd start by
checking the laptop manufacturer's website for diagnostics and run some tests
on the hard drive.

Alternately, try booting Windows XP in safe mode (press F8 at the "loading
windows" screen and select "Safe Mode") Then, from Start--Run, type chkdsk /r
and press enter. This will scan the disk drive for errors and attempt to
recover any data stored on bad areas.

If there are no indications of hard drive problems then my recomendation is
to boot to the XP CD and run setup to do a new installation of Windows. When
you get to the section where you choose the partition to install Windows to,
delete the existing partition and create a new one. This will wipe out the
old partition and any problems it has and it will format the new partition
which will give you a clean start.

Good luck.

Hi, yes, I have been thinking about the hard drive myself. I have run the
Maxtor "maxblast" (drive checker for Maxtor Drives) software from a bootable
CD, it reads the fujitsu drive and looks OK! As I said, the errors are being
encountered now, when I try loading a new XP, with the install disk, so
unless there are any another suggestions, a new hard drive might be
required!

Another thought to consider; if the hard drive checks out but you run into
problems installing from CD, it could be your CD drive. If it has trouble
reading data during copy operations it can sometimes appear as if the hard
drive is the problem. ONe way to test this is to boot to the CD then enter
the XP recovery console. Then try copying the i386 directory to the hard
drive. That may help diagnose a problem reading from the CD.

Yea, If only i could get to the recovery concole!
It is hanging on "examining 56000mb Disk 0 at Id 0 on Bus 0 on atpi..."!!!
It will not go any further then that!
