re-install or repairing Windows XP

P

Patrick Quinn

After installing the long version of SP2, a month later I
tried to repair or reinstall WinXP PRO using my WinXP Pro
disk .
I got a negative message informing me that there was a
newer version installed on my mchine and the install
process failed.

There is not a newer version of XP Pro in the markeplace so
I am assuming that the install of SP2 is the culprit. Is
there a fix for this. ?

I am running a generic machine that I built and uses a AMD
Barton 2800 chip with a Gig of DDR 3200 memory on a late
model MSI board . I have had to re-install WINXP PRO once,
since the machine was built and I used the same CD rom with
the OS on it. This is why I suspect SP2 is the culprit.

Any help would be appreciated. IF you feel you have a lead
for me, I would appreciate an e-mail at (e-mail address removed)

Thanks is advance for your help.

Hi

That error is because SP2 is installed and you are trying to repair from an
earlier version of XP. You can download the SP2 file (266 MBs) from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en -
if you have a copy of the SP2 CD, you can copy the xpsp2.exe file that onto
your hard disk/partition and use that:

and then follow the directions in the following article to create a
slipstreamed XP CD - which will enable you to run a 'Repair' install of SP2:

http://www.msfn.org/articles.php?action=show&showarticle=49

Otherwise you will to use the XP CD you have, to revert to the version of XP
on the CD, then upgrade to SP2 again afterwards.

Hi Patrick,

Most folks will reply only to this forum, keeps things where others can
learn from it, one of the main purposes of forums such as these.

Your existing XP install, updated with SP2, is newer than what you have,
which is why you get that message.
If you want to do a repair install with your exisiting XP Pro cd, you will
need to slipstream SP2 into it, and burn to a new cd. This will create a
completely bootable cd of XP Pro with SP2 included, and you can proceed with
your repair install. The only option you would have with your existing pre
SP2 cd, is to do a format/clean install.

I used autostreamer to create my SP2 slipstreamed cd. Easy to use.

Or, if you want to know more about how slipstreaming works, check out this

Hope this helps,

Try uninstalling SP2. The repair should work.

Best thing to do is create a slipstreamed CD with SP2. This
has been covered in details before in all the XP groups.
Just do a Google search for "slipstream xp sp2" and you'll
find a huge number of instructions.
