Re-install Windows XP SP2 with Windows XP's CD

G

Guest

have 2 hard drives in my PC, but I made 3 partition of them C, F and G. I
have Windows XP Pro with SP2 installed on C and G. Now the C part got virus
and need to be re-installed, but my Windows XP Pro CD doesn't have SP2 in it,
it only came with SP1, I downloaded the SP2 from Mcrosoft myself.

Everytime I try to re-install it, there was a pop up window coming out, told
me that the installation can't be run because I have newer version, also
whenever I restart my PC, the BIOS never came up. I also tried to the Windows
safe mode but still it didn't work. I also try to uninstall 1 of the hard
drives (F and G) but the problem still there, I still can't launch the
Windows XP Pro's auto run. Can you let me know how to re-install it?

You cannot install Windows from within Windows. You must boot
the machine with your WinXP CD, then perform the installation.

When finished you must install a decent virus scanner.

Formatting the hard drive to solve a virus or spyware problem is
rather like using an axe to trim one's fingernails. Sure, it'll
probably get the job done, but it's rather messy...., and almost always
unnecessary.

However, if that's what you want to do:

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

That's because you're trying to start the installation from within
Windows. Why would you even consider such a thing, if your goal is to
eliminate a virus? All you'd be doing this way is ensuring that the new
installation is also infected.

It depends on your point of view. To me an infected system
is a compromised system. I require my systems to be stable,
hence I won't tolerate compromised installations.

Use a computer that is not infected. Slipstream your SP1 to SP2.
Windows will sometimes change drive letters when doing a repair/install,
when using these _partitioning schemes_.

I would try to rid the computer of the viruses first. Go to this site
to help
with the malware removal.

Thank you for your suggestion, but can you let me know how to boot from
WinXP CD? Because everytime I restart my PC, the first page that came up is
ask me to choose Windows XP in C or in G, there was no offer the opportunity
to delete, create and format partition like your suggestion. Eventhough I
pressed F8, still the WinXP's auto run didn't come up. The virus infect my
files that made my Win.INI lost, and it affect other programs. Many thank's
in advance.

You may need to re-arrange the order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS
to boot from the CD.

If you're waiting to press <F8>, you've gone well past the point of
when you can enter the BIOS.

In the extremely unlikely event that your PC's manual or the
motherboard manufacturer's web site doesn't contain the needed
information, try one or more of the following:

Well, I'd say that it depends upon the criticality of the specific
system's applications and data (of course, at this level of concern, the
data is also forever suspect, and would have to be permanently
discarded, as well), and one's level of "paranoia," for want of a better
term.

For the overwhelming majority of people, particularly home users,
formatting and reinstalling the OS and applications is simply overkill,
and a vast waste of time. Most malware infections can easily be
completely cleaned using readily available tools.

The reason you are getting the message is that you have SP2 or SP1
installed, and your CD is without that SP level.

But it doesn't matter,. You are trying to do the installation incorrectly,
and that's why you get the error. If you do it correctly, it formats the
drive, wiping out whatever is there, and what starts out there makes no
difference at all.

You're trying to do the installation from within Windows, and that's what is
wrong. Just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order if
necessary to accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean
installation (delete the existing partition by pressing "D" when prompted,
then create a new one).

Anyway, I just realized that the Windows XP-SP2 installed in my PC is NOT
original, but I do OWN my original Windows XP-SP1. I bought this PC from a
friend. So whenever I try to install the bootdisk from Microsoft, I failed.

On many PCs you keep pressing the Delete key very early
during the boot phase. On others its F12 or F10. If you cannot
work it out, watch the screen early during the boot phase or
consult the manual that came with your PC. Look for the chapter
on "BIOS Setup".

Once you're in the BIOS, look for "Boot options".

Not really, because we can't see your computer. You'll have to enter
the BIOS, read the various options for yourself, and make the
appropriate selection. Don't forget to consult the manual that came
with the computer, or the manufacturer's support web site.
