Using XP Pro, SP2 - I want to re-install Windows Backup, but cannot find it
on the Windows disk, or online. Where can I find the file to re-install?

First make sure that Backup is not in
Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\System Tools

ntbackup.exe should be located in C:\WINDOWS\system32

What happens if you click Start | Run | Type: ntbackup | Click OK?

Does ntbackup.exe open?

On the XP Pro CD:
Drive letter:\I386\NTBACKUP.EX_ the compressed version of NTBACKUP.EXE
and
Drive letter:\I386\NTBACKUP.HL_ the compressed version of NTBACKUP.HLP

The underscore (_) means that the files are compressed. They both need to
be expanded.

NTBACKUP.EX_ needs to be expanded to
C:\WINDOWS\system32
or
%windir%\system32

NTBACKUP.HL_ needs to be expanded to
C:\WINDOWS\Help
or
%windir%\Help

To expand the files to the proper locations...

Open a Command Prompt...
Start | Run | Type: cmd | Click OK

Insert your XP CD into your CD drive and enter (Copy and Paste) the
following command:

EXPAND -R D:\I386\NTBACKUP.EX_ %windir%\system32\ntbackup.exe

Hit your ENTER key.

Enter (Copy and Paste) the following command:

EXPAND -R D:\I386\NTBACKUP.HL_ %windir%\Help\ntbackup.hlp

Hit your ENTER key.

NOTE :
Change D to = your CD drive letter if different.

Hi Wesley. Yes, Backup opens. The problem I've been having in the last few
days is that when I do a backup, it stops and gives me error messages like:

Warning: Unable to open "C:\" - skipped.
Reason: The system cannot find the path specified.

....or ...

WARNING: Portions of "\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Adobe\Photoshop
Elements\How-Tos\4.0\en_us\recipes\adobe\css\help_content.css" cannot be
read. The backed up data is corrupt or incomplete.
This file will not restore correctly.

I can back up just fine using Retrospect to my One-Touch drive, but when I
do my weekly backup to the removable drive using Windows Backup, the backups
don't finish. So I thought I'd try re-installing.

Ok I see Wesley gave you the procedure to reinstall from the CD.

This is getting worse. I just re-installed ntbackup.exe, tried another
backup, it failed, and below is the log. The thing to realize is that each
time backup fails, I get different errors. This time it says it can't open
and find certain files, all of which I can find on the hard drive.

What do I do?

You can clone both partitions and whole drives using DFSee. You can
download an ISO from:

http://www.dfsee.com/dfsee/cdrom.php

and burn a boot disk, (ISO includes boot) from which you can boot and
back up to your hearts content.

This is a super powerful disk utility, not just a copy program. You can
get it as a demo, but to get support on the mailing list you have to buy
it.

Use a better backup software, some files may not backup due to being in

Update - I just did a backup using something called Bounceback Express,
which came with my Seagate external HD. It worked fine. So the problem is
definitely with Windows Backup - which had been working perfectly for years.

Weird.
