For special characters in general, see
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/InsertSpecChars.htm.

For the lower case pi in particular, it's in the Insert > Symbol dialog --
set the font to "(normal text)" and the subset to "Basic Greek". Or, in the
body of a document (if you're using Word 2002 or later), type 03c0 and press
Alt+X.
