It sounds as if the update database has got a little damaged, you could try
this:-

Logon to the Administrator account

go to Start > Run > type in: cmd

In the Command window keyin

net stop wuauserv
Click OK

With explorer,
Navigate to the WINDOWS\Software Distribution\DataStore\Logs folder
Delete ALL contents of it. (not the directory itself)
Now Delete the contents of WINDOWS\Software Distribution\Download folder
(not the directory itself)
Now Delete the contents of WINDOWS\Software Distribution\EventCache (not the
directory itself)

go back to the previous command window, type in

net start wuauserv
Click OK
keyin exit (to close this window)

If the system automatically performs a Windows Update, then empty the
Recycle Bin.
If no auto update is run try going to the windows update site
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com that should do a check for any required
updates. It will also rebuild info in the above cleaned up folders.

This sounds like a dangerous thing to do, but these 3 folder are created
dynamically when an update is run and should not cause you any problems.

PS This should have been posted in microsoft.public.windowsupdate ( for
future reference )
(Scalped from a Mow Green answer in windowsupdate forum)
