Thats what it usually reports if there is a problem.

How have you got the hard drive jumpered ?

What are you trying to format it with, and what OS ?

I recently encountered a similar situation. I am running Windows XP Pro and
went into Disk Management. I then establed the drive as a Primary Partition
and I was then able to format the drive in NTFS. If you do not have Windows
XP then create a Primary Patition with fdisk.

This is something like making a field ready. First you mark the
boundaries and then you plow the various sections.

FDISK is to set up the boundaries of each partition you want to work
with. Format is similar to preparing the furrows where you want to
sow.

So first use FDISK or any partitioning software to make a single or
multiple partitions and then format each.

Or a dud housing. The obvious way to see if the drive
is a dud is to see if the drive works as an internal drive.
