Hi Michael,

Random , unwarned restarts are an indication of a system failure. You need
to determine what is causing it. There are two approaches (and you can often
combine them to determine the source of the fault):

1) Start/run eventvwr.msc and check the system and application logs for
clues. Sometimes, the "help and support" links within the error message can
lead to an answer.

2) Change the default system behavior. Go to the control
panel/system/advanced tab, click on startup and recovery settings. Uncheck
the option to automatically restart on system failure. Now, when a fault
happens, the system should display a "stop" error or blue screen with an
error message that can hold clues to the problem.

Once you know what is wrong, straightening it out is much easier.

Hi!
By default, XP is configured that when a system failure is encountered
the system automatically restarts.
Right click [My Computer] click [Properties] and select [Advanced] tab.
Click the [Settings] button in the [Startup and Recovery] section.
Remove the checkmark from [Automatically Restart] in [System Failure]
section.
Now when you will reboot the machine the system should display a "stop"
error or blue screen with an error message. It will help you to detect
the problem.
you may also check the Event viewer.
start>control panel>administrative tools>event viewer-here you look for
application error logs.

Hi,

I'm also experiencing restarts on a PC that I just
built. My virus software and recommended Microsoft
patches are up to date.

I'm primarily experiencing two errors that seem to be
related to the restarts.

1.)Faulting application helpctr.exe, version
5.1.2600.1106, faulting module helpctr.exe, version
5.1.2600.1106, fault address 0x00001ac2.

and
2.Fault bucket erors such as 76077169.

Help. Any ideas????
