xp restart on AV update

ok so I'm playing WoW (world of warcraft) and suddenly without notice my pc
restarts and when I log back on my anti-virus software says theres another
update to its virus list so I go ahead and press 'ok' to update it.
everything is fine again until another AV update comes out. is there a way so
that my computer does not restart when AV wants to update? I use Avast AV and
this only happens when playing certain games like Wow, it doesn't happen when
I am writing an e-mail or anything just fullscreen apps it happens. sometimes
when playing BF1942 a notification shows saying AV has update available so I
know to exit and let it update but as of late that notice doesn't show up and
the pc just restarts without notice, I know I should be asking Avast but they
said its an OS issue and not their product, also I wonder why when it used to
only update once a week now its almost every other day, is it thats there are
more threats out there or just that they got better at detecting new threats?
either way its quite scary when your pc suddenly restarts you think, "oh what
now?"

Right click on the Avast icon in your system tray and pull up the
program settings.
Go to Confirmations. Make sure in the top section all four boxes are
checked for ASK.
Go to Update BASIC - change it to what you would like. You can make
auto if you like or drop back to manual here.
You can finally go to Troubleshooting and also have it check for full
screen apps so it does not interfere.

Yes, there are that many more threats.
