Random Muting??

The Wave option on volume control keeps getting set to
mute. This occurs a few times a week. I know how to fix
it (go into volume control and unmute) but I need to know
why it happens. Has anyone else seen this issue occur?
What could cause something like this?
 
Perhaps running a game that has in its settings wav support turned off.
Often games and multimedia programs settings change the mixer settings.

I have been going crazy with this problem -- it only happens on my wife's XP Home unit.
I have XP professional on a Toshiba. After considerable research I suspect it is a default mode of the video card in her machine. I have contacted Dell to see if they know anything.
If I find out I will post it.
