Random Freeze on XP Home SP2

My laptop occassionally freezes for no apparent reason - not under load or
anything. It happens after a simple mouse click, or midway through dialup or
even after I've left it for a while doing nothing - I come back and it's
stopped. I recently saw an update that I got that mentioned it was a fix for
a halt problem when running norton security but it hasn't helped and I can't
remember the fix. Any ideas? I was wondering if it was an overheat problem -
running lots of USB devices etc. Would a laptop fan cooler help?
