ram not reading right

I have a home built PC which I had to buy a new AMD Athlon motherboard for. My question is that I have 384 MB of Ram installed but when I go to system info it tells me that I only have 352 MB of Ram and could this cause my PC from shutting down and starting on it's own? I have tried installing a 256 ram by itself and it then reads that I have 224. Seems to be missing 32 mb's. Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

does it have an onboard agp video that uses system ram????
say 32M of it?

What is the make and model of your motherboard?

Does it have the video integrated into the motherboard?

If so then it will be using some of your RAM, in your case probably 32
mb, for video, and therefore Windows has 32 mb less to use for itself.

It sounds like you have an on-board video card that is utiliting 32 megs of
RAM.

Hi Ron, the make and model of my motherboard is a MSI Mainboard 6738 KM2M Combo-L. I looked in the info that came with the board and cannot see the video integrated into the motherboard. Is there another way to find out if it's there? Thank you so much for your info. At least I'm getting some understanding on this matter. Thank you again.

Thank you everyone for all your support, will continue to look into this matter to see if I have an onboard video card. I noticed in my device manager that under other devices I have a yellow question mark and under that I have Multimedia Audio Controller listed which has a yellow ? and ! mark. Could this have anything to do with it? Tried undating drivers but it won't let me as it says that it cannot find the necessary software. I really do appreciate all your support, thank you again.

Hi Shar.

The specs for that board say that it has integrated S3 video plus an
AGP slot (so you can install a higher performance video card and
disable the integrated video if you want maximum video performance.

If you look on the back of the computer you will see the video
connector is located right beside a 9 pin serial port connector, with
the 25 pin parallel printer port connector right above the two of
them. That is the standard location for the video connector on a
motherboard with integrated video. If you had a separate video card
with its own memory then the video connector would be located on one
of the accessory card slots.

Here is the manufacturer's web site with the specifications of the
board plus a photo of it.

Note under "Special Features" where it lists the OnBoard video using
32 mb of RAM.

Hope this clarifies the situation for you

Good luck

You DO have onboard video that is using 32mb of your RAM.. and you should
use the supplied mobo cd to rectify your sound card problem.. did you run
the mobo cd at all?

Yes.. the motherboard cd.. shutting down can be caused by a virus, overtaxed
power supply, faulty memory, almost anything hardware.. look at cooling
too..

Hi Mike, thank you so much for your reply, forgive me if I am asking a
stupid ? I'm assuming that the mobo cd is the one that came with my
motherboard. Is that correct? Another ? would this cause my PC to shutdown
on it's own. When I reseat the ram it works again for a week or so and then
back to the same problem. I will look into it and thank you so much to
everyone that has given me support on this matter. I really appreciate it.
Have a great day.

Thank you Mike for your reply, will give it a try and see how I make out, I've read the cd but not sure which one to run to rectify my sound card problem. I do have sound but just was questioning why my other devices has a yellow ? mark on it. You all have helped me to understand some things about the PC. It's nice to know that I can get all the help I need right here in this newsgroup and which by the way I am learning loads of things by just reading here. Thanks once again! Have a great day.
