XP Machine re-boots at random

A

addajio

I have:

AMD Athlon XP 1800
741GX-M Motherboard

North Bridge Chipset: 741
South Bridge Chipset: 964L
Graphics Processing Unit/Driver name: SiS Mirage Graphics
RAM - 384 MB

Nvidia GeForce 6200 A-LE AGP RAM 256MB
Creative xFi Soundcard
Fresh Install of XP/SP2 and all updated drivers [really]

This is a legacy computer built to play MedievalTW [which will not work with
Nvidia 8xxx/9xxx cards- I have a 9800GT in my Vista machine.

I have been trying so many things from software [driver upgrades/rollbacks -
98SE]
to using on-board graphics/sound, to changing Windows settings/in-game
settings for weeks now and no joy. In MTW, it is fine on Campaign map but
ALWAYS reboots whenever I enter the Battle map!. I install a couple other
games to test, and they too will either freeze/reboot or Crash to Desktop

This machine will reboot occasionally when I am online. I am hoping someone
might point me to a likely cause/solution.

I suspect:
-System Ram - I have 2 slots with 1 x 128M and 1 x 256M PC2700. I ve read
that uneven sticks can create problems in some configurations.

-Power Supply - only 300 Watt, but still shouldn't cause reboot when
online...unless faulty perhaps.

thanks - Tony

Go to control panel---system---advanced tab---startup and recovery and
remove X from automatic restart on system failure.

Thanks for the replies,

To PA Bear:

I did install sp3 on a previous [last week] XP install and it made no
difference.

To Unknown:

I did as you suggested, and surprisingly all went well in the first
game...I then tried MTW which always rebooted, and it actually played as it
should, even when I ran entire armies across the map and pushed the game
speed to 100 % for almost an entire battle - that in itself was a major
advance...but then a Blue Screen of Death - luckily it hung long enough for
me to pause it and write this information down...I didn't include the first
few paragraphs saying to check disk space [fine] or drivers etc, but it did
say to disable caching and shadowing in BIOS and said if a driver appeared
below the "STOP", to disable/remove it...there is one, but its my graphics
driver so that won't happen [it is the current Nvidia 258.96 XP driver for my
card]:

"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent
damage to your computer…etc

*** STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0xBD1241FF, 0xB7B24AD4, 0x00000000)

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete

Hope this helps , thanks - Tony

Sorry I couldn't edit my last post to include the following:

I disabled "Video Shadowing" in BIOS and also disabled "AGP Fast-Write" .
I restarted and set color to 8-bit [256 color is what MTW was written for]

Everything fine for a number of battles - then I raised the Audio Quality
from Low to High and during the next battle got another Blue Screen:

"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent
damage to your computer…

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

…[standard cautions]

*** STOP: 0x000000D1 (0x0000B46C, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0xF6235E2D)

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete
Contact your system Administrator or Technical support group for further
assistance"

I'm not sure what the "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" meant, but the driver
it references is my Creative X-Fi card, as found in C\Windows\System32\drivers

I realize most of the error text is probably only decipherable by the
writers of the drivers, but I'm hoping the parts in English : } may be of
help - Tony

Looks like video and audio drivers may be out of date. When was the last
time you checked for updates to these drivers?

I totally agree with Mark. Have you updated your drivers? If so, You may
want to try re-installing them.
