Radeon 9600pro and Battlefield 2

Hallo,
I have a friend with a Radeon 9600pro. I installed Battlefield 2 and the
patches 1.2 and 1.21 on his sytem and the game now doesn´t load. The screen
goes black flashes twice and then crashes back to desktop. I have installed
new drivers, turned off vpu recover but the game just will not load, if we
leave the patches it will load but that means he cannot play on ranked
servers. At this moment i am tearing my hair out as i just cannot find what
the problem is. I have tried Ea´s forums and websites but their support is
toilet bowl quality to say the least. If any one here has a soloution that
works please let me know. The rest of his system is AMD Sempron 3ghz 512mb
Ram 230gb sata hardrive and a no name mainboard with a via chipset.

Thanks in advance

The 512Mbs of RAM doesn't help.
BF2 needs at least 1Gb....2Gb is better.

512 doesn't help performance but its not a barrier to running the
install or the software.

Up unitl 2 weeks ago I was running BF2 at 800x600 low settings on a
1.6Ghz P4, 512 MB of RAM and a Radeon 9600 Pro. It was ok on 16 and 32
player maps, but some 64 player maps were slow, with the exception of
Wake Island. With less than 1 Gb of RAM you are waiting on startup a
long time to load the map.

Prior to that I had a FX5200 card - not supported I know but it ran,
with occasional and temporary slow downs and the odd freeze. One of the
ways to improve 512 MB performance is to disable all unneeded apps and
processes via the task manager before running BF2. I killed anti-virus,
anti-spyware, printer monitoring software etc. I rebooted after
finishing BF2.

More RAM will be the cheapest fix.

Were the patches applied on a fresh install of BF2? Some games are picky
about this because they autodetect video settings on first run.

Set the AGP speed to 4x in BIOS. 8x causes crashes on some systems.

only 512mb ? maybe the default settings after the patch are eating up
more ram ?! try unloading all the unneeded stuff, maybe that helps to
start ? just guessing.

also reload the VIA 4 in 1 just the VGart for agp, that may help. I
am inclined to agree, maybe reload the game with patches then start the
game. Have you tried the forums for that game ?
