QuickTime on an XP system

I've been having a problem, when trying to download QuickTime 7. I get an
error message (it has no numeric code) that reads:

"Could not open key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\QuickTimePlayerLib.QuickTimePlayerApp\CLSID.
Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support
personnel.

I used to be able to use an older QuickTime, but after I uninstalled it and
downloaded the newer QuickTime I started getting the message and no I don't
have any viruses ... got a clean bill of health from microsofts new virus
killer and the folks at Trend Micro. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Has anyone had this problem and if so did you find a fix?

You can try this:
Start>Run>regedit[enter]
Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT –> Installer and select Products
Use the Find menu to find quicktime inside that part of the key. Delete
the part of the tree that you find. You should now be able to install
Quicktime and iTunes without incident. Maybe.

If that doesn't help:

This is exactly the problem I am having. Did you take first suggestion posted
here or find another solution? I have been searching discussion groups, apple
support etc all day looking for others with similar problems but no luck. I
am wary about taking the "maybe" solution of deleting all of those Quicktime
references in the registry because I have no idea what that means. Somebody,
please help!

Export a copy of the key in the registry from File | Export, then delete the
key. If need be you can Import or merge that key back. Always have a full
and complete backup of the system. If you don't want to try this then your
recourse is Apple support. It's their product.
