Quick Launch in Task Manager?

E

epack

New WinXP Pro SP2 machine.
From time to time lately I've noticed that "Quick Launch" appears in
the applications box of Task Manager, even right after booting when
nothing else is running. It's not consistent, I think (I'll pay more
attention now :) but I'm not sure why this is happening. The "regular"
QL appears just fine and acts normally, but my old win2K Pro never did
this, nor does my winXP Pro SP2 machine at work do this (I think :)
There's only one instance of explorer.exe in the processes box, so I'm
not sure why I'm seeing this in the apps box.

Everything still works fine, this just nags at me and I don't like
unexplained things. Ideas? Fix?

TIA

Hello , Could this fix be as easy as removing QL from Startup menu ?
Star/run/msconfig/OK/Startup/ .. uncheck QL/restart .
-Or- Stop and Disable in "Registry" ?

Possibly, except it's not in my startup, any of them, folder or
registry, and it's not happening all the time. Good thought, tho. And I
definitely WANT the QL toolbar :) Just don't want it showing up in task
manager when it should not be.

Hello , I use XP Home | in a Hewlit Packard Laptop and I have (2) Quick
Launch functions . (1) Is in the lower left Task Bar [near start button]of
about (15) Quick Launch icons which are stored of course in the "Quick Launch
Folder" I open this folder by right clicking on a blank space area near the
Start Button/click Open Folder . I can drag a prevuiosly shortcutted desktop
item this folder in turn the dragged item/shortcut will appear in that "Quick
Launch"area near the Start Button . (2) Just above my keyboard on the Laptop
, are "Quick Launch Buttons" I use them rarely . To make the buttons launch
what I want , I needed to go to H/P and download the software for the "Quick
Launch" buttons at H/P . I set up the buttons to launch what I liked . I am
not sure how to remove the "Quick Launch" feature . An expert will soon see
your post and I am sure you will read about a fix from reply . You should
post The Make & Model of your PC for this one . I am not an expert and I am
guessing that the fix will be within the "Quick Launch" feature and not the
Task Manager: I searched and Task Manager doesn't seem to be the culprit .
Good Luck epack .

Um, I absolutely do NOT want to *remove* the Quick Launch feature, not
in the slightest! I use it ALL the time. What I want to know is why it
is *periodically* showing up in the Task Manager--THAT was my original
question.

Hello ,
Been a while since I checked back .. oops . I am surprised noone has
responded . I believe the launcher shows in the Task Manager because the Q.L.
feature must be added to the "Starup menu" in order to work . Thus always
running in the background . If the Q.L. shows periodicaly in the Task Manager
, that would be strange ,,, to me . Unless the Q.L. was removed from the
"Startup menu" but if that in fact happens , you must reload this Q.L.
feature or it will not function . To reload the Q.L. , you need to "Repair"
it . I do not know the path to find its folder .. I am not on that PC right
now . Ha , the screen failed after 6 weeks of buying the new PC . Run a
search for Quick Launch/open its folder and run "Setup" again . You may be
able to repair it from Add and Remove programs /Quick Launch Buttons/ Click
"Remove" and if the option then comes up with a choice to "Repair" select to
repair and the Q.L> will be placed back into Startup menu and Task Manager .

Well, on my win xp pro machine at work, it does NOT show up in the task
manager at all, nor is it in my startup. On THIS machine, tho, it is
also not in my startup but it DOES show up in the task manager. Not
sure what the difference is.I have a laptop here, too, and it acts the
same as my work machine, no QL in the task manager or startup. I can't
think what the difference could be.

Well, it's not an application, I think, at least I have no QL folder
nor setup. It's just a toolbar... Other than enabling it or disabling
it (which I've tried) there's no other way I know about to "uninstall"
it. I've tried killing it in the task manager, nada, it just keeps
coming back. Mind you, it works nicely where it is supposed to work,
but I just want it out of the task manager.

If Quick Launch shows in the Task Manager under the Applications tab.
Right click Quick Launch and select: Go to Process.
This will switch to the Processes tab with
the related process highlighted.
This might be a clue.

Quick Launch in Windows is just two folders and a Taskbar toolbar. It does
NOT show up in Task Manager.

%userprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
or
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Quick Launch

and

%allusersprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
or
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Quick Launch

Right click the Taskbar | Properties | Taskbar tab |
Make sure this is checked: Show Quick Launch
Click Apply | Click OK

Show Quick Launch
[[Displays the Quick Launch bar on the taskbar. The Quick Launch bar is a
customizable toolbar that lets you display the Windows desktop or start a
program with a single click. You can add buttons to start your favorite
programs.]]

If it isn't a 3rd party program that you have added...

UPDATE your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

UPDATE whatever anti-spyware applications that you have and run a full
system scan with each one.

You might want to start in Safe Mode to run your antivirus and anti-spyware
software.

Running a full system antivirus scan or anti-spyware scan in Safe Mode can
be a good idea. Some viruses and other malware like to conceal themselves
in areas Windows protects while using them. Safe mode will prevent those
applications access and therefore unprotect the viruses or other malware
allowing for easier removal.
