Quick Launch Icons are STILL Incorrect, after iconcache_10.vbs

B

Britt Dickson

I posted this back in March:

Britt said:
Just recently, the Quick Launch icons have been scrambled on startup, with
no pattern that I can see. The icons are there, but Internet Explorer (for
example) has the Outlook Express Icon, and so on for all of them. If I
turn
off Quick Launch (right-click taskbar, select toolbars, then uncheck Quick
Launch. Reverse to re-enable), and then turn it back on again, they are
correct.

How can I keep them that way?

Then Joe gave me this answer:

It worked a couple times, then quit. I increased the base script to 15,000,
then 25,000 with no improvement.

What am I missing?

Thanks,

Britt Dickson

Britt,

The icon cache size should be set to a maximum of 4 Kb (4096)

Many users recently have stated that the registry files on that site don't work
for them. All they are are a collection of tweaks taken from all over the
Internet, put together into a registry file, hosted on static html pages

Unless you understand the registry I wouldn't just download a so-called registry
tweak just because it's hosted on the Internet because you could be entering
anything or just as bad corrupting your registry

There is an icon cache 'db' file that can be deleted & Windows will re-create
the file. Just go into your username on 'Documents & Settings' (Example:
C:\Documents and Settings\[username here]) & search for '*.db' (without quotes),
which is hidden. Make a copy before hand if you are unsure then delete the
original icon db file.

It is certainly true that one should not download and run any registry
tweak (or anything else) found on the internet. There are lots of
ineffective (and worse, even malicious) tweaks out there. But of all
sites one might distrust, to suggest that Kelly's registry tweaks
should be avoided is nonsense. Kelly's site is one of the oldest, most
well-known, and most-trusted of the Windows support sites available.
Although not every tweak can possibly be effective in every case,
Kelly's site and her tweaks have helped many thousands of people.

Nobody should distrust or fear anything found on her site.

There is no guarantee that any suggested fix will solve a particular
problem. One should always check out any suggested fix before running it.
But the fixes on Kelly's site have helped thousands. To imply that her site
is unreliable or not trustworthy is ridiculous. This coming from someone
who posts fixes as file attachments and says his fixes can be trusted
because he says so?

Rock,

Just because Kelly's site holds many registry keys collected from info around
the web it doesn't mean they always work. It the past few weeks there have been
4 or more people who have ran a registry fix from that site which hasn't worked

Remember, most of those registry tweaks are the same as Windows 2000 & many even
date back to Windows 95/98 days too so many of these registry tweaks aren't new.
Its just Kelly has collectively added them to a webpage with a very basic
columned table. There are no search facilitied unless you press CTRL + F... Why
is Kelly's site still a static HTML page? Why hasn't it been converted to
ASP.NET yet?

There are two more MVPs who have got an ASP.NET page & when you refresh it you
get the top frame repeated throughout the page however many times you click the
refresh & they are two programming MVPs. Just shows you they cannot code. Maybe
they have fixed the error now

Rock. What I have seen from you is you like going on to people for double
posting & I see you have answered 1000 of posts in the last year, but if you cut
out the formentioned then I am sure that cuts out around 500 of your posts. For
a so-called MVP its not very good, is it? Where is the help in those posts -
there isn't any.

MVPs stick together - I see that & remember you only need a website & to post
many comments to become one. At least I go the entra step & code a correct
answer to help the OP out. One of those posts had a few MVPs saying removal of a
System Tray icon wasn't possible even though on the developers site it was. Not
very valuable help from 3 Most Valuable Professionals (MVPs), is it? I proved
that it was possible & the OP was over the moon but what I did. Another simple
example of your help was a folder security question where you told the OP to
remove ALL permissions to that folder & I said in a reply to you that it makes
it totally useless as you have no way of listing the contents... Another Most
Valuable Professional tip from you there :))

Next. I have been coding longer than you have been using a computer or quite
possible longer than you have been born. Now calm down & pick your toys up

Lastly. The idea of these newsgroups are to help each other & share knowledge.

Spare us your bullsh*t. You are jealous and insecure. It comes through in
everything you. I was pointing out the twisted nature of your logic, and as
usual, instead of sticking to the topic, you spout off in all different
directions trying to show how smart you are. It doesn't work, Newbie.
People know about you. You're a jealous bag of hot air with some knowledge.
Otherwise you would let the help you give speak for your abilities. You're
incessant need to belittle others and _try_ to inflate your worth says
volumes about you. It's pathetic.

I know you'll have a need to reply, and what it will say. Have at it. I've
said what I need to say.

.....<All they are are a collection of tweaks taken from all over the

Have no idea where you get your information from; however, my tweaks page is
a holding place or better said a place to point and/or refer XP users to.
My data base is a computation which comes from _years_ of troubleshooting XP
...... starting with the BETA.

Many of my scripts, exe's, utilities, programs and regfiles have taken days
(some weeks) to perfect ...for the XP user. Not simply copied from the
internet as you claim. I don't have to prove my dedication or validity to
you with words, my year in and year out actions speak loud enough.

Ah, and going back to yet another one of your negative posts about my
site/person - every tweak listed is well explained within the A to Z section
and other pages. As in:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks2.htm
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_reg_edits.htm

That being said....users today want the fixes now! They no longer what to
be spoon fed.
For the former - they refer to my tweaks page, for the latter - they refer
to my A to Z section.

Lastly, you seemingly are appearing to be part of the problem instead of
being part of the solution via this group.

Have spent way too much of "my free time" on you.......
