Question on P4 heatsink

I'm building a P4 3.06GHz system. I'm using the stock Intel
heatsink/fan. Do I need to apply thermal compound on the heatsink? The
installation sheet doesn't say.

There is a white square on the copper heatsink which I assume is the
"thermal pad" but I'm not sure. I did a Google but couldn't get an
answer. I found some posts which indicated that the retail boxed 3.06
came with thermal grease. Mine did not. Intel's site wasn't much help.

TIA

The thermal compound has been provided in both forms, as a thermal pad on
the bottom of the heatsink or as a paste. Remember to remove the plastic
protective sheet from the thermal pad before installing.

if you use the thermal pad leave the processor alone if your going to change
it in and out use thermal paste

I don't think I have a thermal pad. I've read that the thermal pad is
black. I have a white square. There is no plastic sheet over it. My
heatsink is identical to this one:

I'll just install it dry and see what happens.

That gray square on the heatsink looks like a thermal pad. But
the heatsink is obviously not an Intel retail heatsink. All of
the retail Intel HSF's I have installed came with the grease but
I have seen Intel HSF's with (aqua) pads. To install this OEM
heatsink, follow its instructions.

My boxed 2.8C came with grey thermal pad on the heat sink. I don't remember
if there was a plastic cover at first or not, but I used AS3 anyways.

If it has goo on the bottom, you shouldn't need any thermal grease. Some of
the older >3GHz Intel heatsinks required you to apply thermal grease, but
this may no longer be the case.
