Can you put thermal paste on P4 Heatsinks?

Hi all, I have 2 spare P4 fans (And heatsinks).

BUT the thermal tape (or whatever you call it), is a bit thin on the bottom
of the heatsink. And I think this
is the reason, why the CPU goes to 50 deg's while
the PC is running (1.5 & 1.7 ghz - 2 systems).

To save me getting/buying another fan/heatsink,
can I use thermal paste or something and smear
it on the bottom of the heatsink? And if I can, what
would be a good thermal paste to get? Or can you
buy just the thermal tape and put it on the bottom
of the heatsink?

Any info appreciated

Thanx

I personally have always replaced the stock fan and heatsink with
Thermaltake units as soon as I could. However, on my latest P4, I stuck
with the stock unit for a couple of months. The pad worked fine. Though
I don't think the stock solution is really set up for overclocking or
anything. I get much better persormance out of my Thermaltake Spark 7+.

Yup I think they sell the Thermaltake Spark 7
here, but if i recall, they dont have the 4 side
clips, so it can clip to the side of the retaining
module base on the motherboard ( I think)?

How would it stay on top of the CPU?

I'll see if I can get one tomorrow. See how it goes

Thanx

It has 2 little arms that link through the retaining clips. Works quite
well.

I got a Spark 7+ but its
only taken it down 5 degs.! Should it
take the temp lower than 5 degs of what the
temp was? Was round 50 has only taken
it down to 45. Thats not a hell of a lot
of diff, considering the RMP's are about 2-3 times
faster than the old CPU fan
