Question and Installation Troubles

G

Guest

So I purchased Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade Edition and attempted to
upgrade it keeping my files and stuff. However, it has been on installing
features and updates for about 10 hours now, so I highly doubt something is
right. I started it yesterday at 4PM and it took to about 7:30 or 8PM to get
to the Installing features and updates part, which is when I left it last
night. I came back this morning (6:30AM now) and it still has not moved. I
don't think I have done anything wrong, however I did here if you were
running Windows XP Home Edition (which I was) that you can't use the upgrade
to Ultimate edition. Is this true and can you help?

Not true.

Ok, thanks. I just returned from and school and found my Vista installation
stuck on the same step. I tried to X it out but it says that it could leave
it in an unstable state so I figured I would leave it on and see if I got any
replies.

Thanks again.

Ok -- another update.

I restarted my computer and it restored XP fine. I then attempted the
upgrade once again. It reached installing features and updates with the same
bar progess on the bottom and has not moved for a while. I have ran the
upgrade advisor and considering I have a AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ and 7800GTX
with 2Gigs of OCZ ram and plenty of HDD space, I figured I would be fine. I
really don't know why it is doing this, and I was really looking forward to
getting Vista up and running soon.

Once again, I thank you all for your time and any help.

Hello Mike,
When it appears to stop? use Shift-F10 to open a CMD prompt.
Can you grab the setupact.log file
(C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log )
What are the bottom 30-40 entries entries?
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

I tried that and it said the drive could not be found -- then I realized
when I open a CMD prompt it starts in X:\$Windows.~BT\sources , so I did that
plus the \Panther\setupact.log . Upon doing this I got an access denied
message.

I had virtual drives setup in XP (through Alcohol 120%), could that be why
it is coming from the 'X' drive? Could that have an effect on the install?

Thanks for the speedy response.

Hello Mike,
Yes that may be possible.
Try copying the file rather than opening with the access denied
Some thread has it open, but if you copy it to another location or name,
you should be able to open the copy.
This may allow to see what is happening when it appears to slow down or stop
If we do this several times we may see setup progressing and see what
actions are taking place.
look at the timestamps as well to see for tasks that are taking a long time.
Thanks,

I removed all the virtual drives and am going to attempt it again. I have a
feeling they may have been part of the issue.

Anyhow this is part (the end) of the setupact.log file:

I just uninstalled Alcohol completely when I removed the virtual drives --
hopefully this install will work and that was the problem. Currently at the
Updating Windows... screen (just before it goes back to expanding files, I
think).

G

Guest

Well, came down this morning to see the install froze in the same spot. I
take a look at the log again...

G

Guest

yes, you cannot upgrade from xp home to vista. upgradation is possible from
xp professional to vista ultimate.

R

Rob Mensching

That's not correct. You can upgrade from XP Home to Vista Ultimate. Take a
look at the grid here:
http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/content.aspx?ctId=390&tabid=1#grid_install2.

You can also download a the upgrade options tool
http://images.windowsmarketplace.com/img/EDT/tools/UpgradeOptionsTool.msi
that should show you what are valid upgrade paths for your current OS.

The Upgrade Advisor
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/upgradeadvisor.mspx
would tell you if there are any known compatiblity issues with your current
machine and Vista.

Hello Mike,
Was in meeting until now.
The log file is showing progress which means the upgrade is proceeding, it
is taking a long time.
If you want me to take a look at the entire log file, you can send it to me.
Remove the online from the email address
Upgrades can take a long time.
This is dependant on the amount of information and data that you have on
your system(how many files and how big are those files) as well as the
number of applications you have installed.
one thing is you could run cleanmgr and clean out things like temporary
Internet files, empty the temp folders
you may want to defrag the system
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Ok well I tried doing it on a new partition, and it reached the same stage
where it got stuck before, however the dots aren't even moving this time. I
don't know what to do from here.

G

Guest

Alright, I'm going to e-mail you over the entire log file in about five
minutes; note that I took this one from when I did I clean install and
canceled after it slowed down at the same spot. Not sure if that makes much
of a difference, since it seemed to hang at the same spot -- if it does I
would be more then happy to run the install again as an upgrade and take the
log file again (since I did not save the one I looked at before).

I'm going to defrag my hard drive and run the cleanmgr now, as well.

I once again thank you for taking time out of your to day for your help and
suggestions.

Hello Mike,
Replying to the thread with what I see in the log files.
Here is where it appears to hang. This is 30 minutes in disk enumeration.
Then it times out and continues on.
So what is the disk configuration ( all drives, removeable media, etc)

On this particular install attempt the disk configuration was:

Local Disk (C:)
3.5 Floppy (A:)
LRMCFRE_EN_DVD (D:) -- (Windows install CD)

On two previous attempts I had about 10 virtual drives and one external hard
drive hooked up via USB. However, I had removed those (uninstalled Alcohol
120% since I did not need it, and unplugged the external hdd) for the attempt
displayed in that log.

Canceling the setup always does seem to take quite some time, however there
was on attempt where in hanged at the Install & Updates part for about 12
hours without moving. The bar at the bottom was stayed in the middle of step
2 for entire time as well.

Defrag is still running and upon its completion I'm going to give it another
go.

Thanks again.

Hello Mike,
Replying to the thread with what I see in the log files.
Here is where it appears to hang. This is 30 minutes in disk enumeration.
Then it times out and continues on.
So what is the disk configuration ( all drives, removeable media, etc)

Hello Mike,
Upgrades will take a longer time and in some cases a much longer time than
clean installs.
If you let it run 12 hours. capture the setupact.log again and send it to
me.
There may be other spots it slows down.
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]
