Question about XPe sp1 product lifecycle

M

MJ

All,

These two webpages:

http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=3220 (this is support lifecycle
for XPe) http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifesupsps (this is the service
pack support page, scroll down until you see "Windows Embedded")

provide me with the following information:

1. Extended Support for Windows XP Embedded ends: 3.31.2012

and

2. support for Windows XP Embedded SP1 ends: 1.18.2007

Given that developers build run-times and cannot actually "patch" their
devices with a service pack, is hotfix support for XPe sp1 truly planned to
end in January of 2007? or will Microsoft continue to provide hotfixes for
XPe SP1 through 2012?

Can anyone answer this question definitively?

Thanks

In general, support for a service pack in many MS products ends either 12
months (or 24 months for those service packs where MS believes customers
will need additional time for testing and deployment) after the next
service pack releases OR at the end of the product's support lifecycle,
whichever comes first. Regarding XP embedded SP1, support for SP1, which
includes producing hotfixes for SP1, technical issues with the XPe SP1
toolkit and runtime will end on 01/18/2007 or 12-24 months after the
release of XPe SP3 which is not known yet, whichever comes first.
Considering that it's already January, 2006, the first cutoff date will be
the applicable one (01/18/2007). XP embedded will still be supported after
01/18/2007 including security and non-security hotfixes and other technical
issues but the OEM has to upgrade to XPe SP2 to be eligible for support.

To Add to K_S' Statement, You can also update devices to SP2 using
methods like SDI, and just replace the entire image on the deployed
device. You can also add components of SP2 manually by DUA and just
adding individual QFE's that were rolled into SP2.
