PRB: QFE updates fail on XPe SP1 running on partition 4 (volume F:)

There appears to be a problem with applying the Windows XP Professional
QFEs for use with the Desktop QFE Installer Tool. We have two
different XPe SP1 configurations - XPe on partition 1 and XPe on
partition 4. With XPe SP1 running on partition 1 (volume C:) the QFE
installations work without problems. However, on XPe SP1 running on
partition 4 (volume F:) the QFE installations fail with the following
error:
"Setup has detected that the version of the Service Pack installed on
your system is lower that what is neccessary to apply this hotfix. At
minimum, you must have Service Pack 1 installed."

This error occurs when trying to apply QFE KB885836 and later QFEs.

I believe this has to do with the checks performed by the setup utility
prior to installing. Perhaps the utility is checking on volume C: for
the presence of req'd files. If the system path is (hard coded)
assumed to be on C: then the checks will fail.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Tony

I'm just guessing here but is it possible the version you have on F:\ is
missing the reg key called out in this thread:
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...q=sp1+missing+reg+key&rnum=1#8291830852ae558a ,
which some installers use to identify the OS?

I doubt update.exe (used by the QFEs as the installation engine) is limited
from running properly on F:\ or non-C:\ partitions since i know the WinSE
team does extensive testing of these QFEs on various Pro scenarios (I've
been known to be wrong).

Contact Jon Fincher at his blog if you still feel this is a problem with the
installer: http://xpeqfe.blogspot.com/

Andy,

Great call! Your "guess" was dead-on right. I was able to apply all
the QFEs after adding the registry value posted in the thread.

Evidently my configurations do indeed differ w/ respect to this
registry value, at least.
The next question, which I must answer for myself, is why my
configurations are different when they "should" be the same except for
the partition they are running on.

Thanks for the prompt reply and help,
Tony
