Putty.exe somehow installed itself

I have a user that suddenly noticed an icon for a shortcut
to Putty.exe application on her desktop. She says she
didn't install it. How could this possibly get installed
onto her computer? Really vague and I know its a SSL
telnet app but I'm stumped as to how it got installed....
 
Any trojan or malicious installation could have placed it there. Putty is a
terminal client, and is just a simple executable--it requires no
installation. I'd be looking for other signs of ill intent on that system.
