"Publish web" takes forever and eventually fails (FrontPage)

When I try to "Publish Web" - it takes a long time. Sometimes it comes back
and asks if I want to replace files, but then takes forever and doesn't work.
Sometimes I get a strange FTP error ("LPAT" I think, didn't write it down).

It used to work consistently, definitely before service pack 2. My web
hosting service swears nothing has changed. In the months & months since it
got worse, I have changed my home router. But I have the same problem
publishing from e.g., a hotel.

Thanks,
Bill Wake

Clear you browser history and temper files.

Then in IE click Tools > Internet options > and click the programs tab.
Click Reset web Settings, and uncheck reset my home page in the next pop up.

Click OK all of the way out and close IE

Then Click Start> Run and enter CMD and click OK

Type: ipconfig /flushdns
and press enter.
( Note there is a space between ipconfig and /flushdns )

When it is done close the command window.

See if anything has improved.

Try publishing a few pages at a time. Do 1 page and publish, and so on. I
have DSL and it sometimes cuts out near completion and I have to republish.
I think the connection pauses too long and the server cuts you off. Just a
guess on that part.

I am sometimes able to publish individual files. I certainly am able to do it
without FrontPage, using an ftp tool. But I don't want to keep track of which
files I'm changing - that's what FrontPage is for:)

Is there some setting I can adjust on my end if this is the problem?

Thanks,
Bill

If you are using FTP and Publishing both, you are creating problems. Stick
with Publishing only. And ask your provider to reset your file extensions.

I've used ftp to prove that I have connectivity & can upload files for a
given url, username, & password. I'd love to just use FrontPage ... if it
worked:)

FP has an option to upload using FTP. I have used it for the last 15 months
or so.
Once the option is set, Publish works perfectly.

I do use FTP upload from time to time, but only when I *know* that the files
I am uploading are the only ones that have changed.

"Perfectly" is not what I'm finding:) I've always used the FTP option but it
gives me trouble now. It takes forever, and eventually reports an error. The
error varies on any given day, but I'd say it's all worked right maybe twice
in the last 6 months.

Well, over to the experts.

I had this problem and tried for days to fix it.
This was before I discovered help boards!
I used FTP to delete the entire site, including all FP directories and
folders.
I then went into my host control panel and disabled then re-enabled
FrontPage extentions.
Then I published the site and never again had that problem.
My site is now over 400 pages and 500 MB and still have never had a
re-occurence.

Can you give me step by step how to do this procedure? I called FP and my
host and neither can help me apparently.

Thnak you

No problem. There is another fix that you should try first.
Open your web in FP. Go to TOOLS > WEB SETTINGS > ADVANCED tab and hit the
"temporary files" button "DELETE FILES".
Close the web and FP then start FP and open the web.
Try to publish.
IF this does not work, let me know and I will go through the entire process
I had to do in the previous post.
Deleting my temp files has helped me out of several problem before,
including sometimes when it takes too long to publish and then fails. So try
deleting the temp files first.
Hope it helps. Agian, if not, let me know and I will detail the full delete
and restart as I had to do it. There might some differences because of the
hosting packages, but we should be able to do the same things with different
control panels.

Hi there,

It didn't work - I even uninstalled and re-installed FP, with no luck.

In fact, I can't even go through File>Publish Web the Publish Web window is
blank with the "options" button grayed out and the Publish web button grayed
out. With nothing in the file windows. the top that says Publish from and to
have the correct information, but that's it.

But this doesn't happen everytime - only sometimes????

If Publish is grayed out, it means you don't Have a web open.

Also to clean up FrontPage "leftover" files,
Go here: http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm and download FP Cleaner ( with
Expression Web Designer and SharePoint Designer support )
Download links are at the bottom of the page.
Run the functions that clear:
The Hidden Temporary files.
The Hidden Cache (*.web) files.

See if it helps.

Thank you, doesn't seem to be helping - it seems to be stuck on the small
window and says, "processing web updates" - so I hit "cancel" - and now
trying to go back in and try it again, the Publish Web window is blank with
the "options" button grayed out and the Publish web button grayed out. With
nothing in the file windows. the top that says Publish from and to have the
correct information, but that's it. And I have a webpage open in FP????

It's like FP doesn't recognize that the web and page are open??

I appreciate all of your help, but is there not a number I can call for MS
FP actual support?

I went to another computer and tried it from our desktop...Now I get a
message that says, "The server sent a response which FP cannot parse. If you
are trying to connect to a FP server, check the servers administrator to
make sure the FP server extensions are installed properly."

I did and they are - he even used FP to upload files from his computer to my
web and it worked fine? I am thinking that my FP is just bad?! (Same FP
disks used to install on both computers.)

Any thoughts??

I am have the same problem, not able to publish one website using http but
if I move it to another machine I can publish using http. It really bugs me
because it is my website, all the others I can publish fine. I even went so
far as to do a clean install (formatted drive c:) and still the same problem
is there. I did restore the data files.

I can publish to the webspace using Frontpage FTP after turning off the
Frontpage extensions. My host thinks it is a Frontpage problem because I
can publish from another machine. I deleted and re-created the webspace,
same result. About the only thing I have not tried is to delete my e-mail
account and setting it up again. I need to wait 31 days before it is truly
deleted and I can't wait that long!
