Error publishing to Web Server

G

Guest

Every time I now attempt to publish using FP 2003, I get an error :
'Could not find server at hostname on Port 21........'.

I have been able to publish successfully before.
I am not using FP extensions so correctly publishing using FTP in Passive
mode.

I believe it is not a Firewall problem as FP is not blocked.
To check I shut off my firewall and it made no difference.

I don't believe it is a hosting problem as I can ftp to my hostname
successfully.
Also, I utilised their own ftp software and was able to publish successfully.

This leads me to believe it is a Front Page problem.
The hosting centre believe it is also stating:
"For some reason, although you're specifying an FTP connection using
ftp://ftp.hostname/web, instead of a http connection using
http://www.hostname, it's still trying to find server extensions to use for a
http connection

You should get an option to continue when this error message comes up,
asking if you want to use FTP instead. Click YES to this.

Unfortunately, as it's an issue with the program itself, this is as far as
we can take it, as there's nothing wrong with the server (no extensions are
installed, your hosting package only supports FTP). If it continues, you will
need to contact Microsoft support to fix it."

However, I don't get an option asking if I want to use FTP. Instead it just
doesn't work.

Is this a bug in FP ?
Is there a hotfix or Service Pack ?

I've checked the Knowledge Base in MS and can find nothing.

Check to see if your web host has upgraded or changed the configuration of their FTP server, as FP
can communication with all FTP server, in which case you will have to use a 3rd Party FTP
application.

This statement contradicts itself. If FP can communicate with all FTP servers
then an upgrade or configuration change should make no difference.

Sorry, should have read "can not communicate with all FTP servers,"

Thanks for reply.
That is a point because nothing on my Firewall or within FP (to my
knowledge) had changed.
I will check with them again whether they have re-configured anything though
I would be surprised if they had, since wouldn't it then affect all customers
publishing with FTP ?
When I originally raised this issue with them they said there was no problem
at their end. They were adamant it was an FP issue.
If you look at my original post they suggest it was a known FP problem (FP
attempting to use Server extensions over an http connection even though I was
using ftp) , but they didn't elaborate on where they got this info from. I
will double check though.

I have a FTP application (FP may require the same) that requires two open sessions in order to
upload or download files, I am not sure what my web host did to allow me to have more then one FTP
session, but I think the default for many FTP servers is a single session.

Thomas,
I checked with the hosting provider. They stated that no configuration
changes had occurredo on the FTP Servers.
Would you elaborate on the two open sessions. I'm not sure I understand so
just in case I need to go back to them and request this ?
Do you think it's worth doing an FP repair ?

T

Thomas A. Rowe

The two open sessions = You need to be able to have two open connections simultaneously.

Has you ISP by any chance limited the upload file size?

Have you installed IE 7?

Thomas, As far as I am aware there is no limit to the upload file size,
though in the recent failures I have had the changes are only literally KB's
in size so that shouldn't be a problem.

I have not installed IE 7. Is that a requirement ?

T

Thomas A. Rowe

No, IE7 is not a requirement. Just check to see if that could be an issue. Do you have FP installed
on another machine that you could try accessing the site from?

Thats a good point. I'll try and do that. It should help pinpoint where the
actual problem lies (FP or the host or elsewhere).
I think I may do a repair on Front Page first also to see if that works.

Unfortunately I don't have access to another machine to use.

However, I have got a little bit further in understanding the problem though
not totally resolving it.
When publishing, what I didn't mention previously as I thought it wasn't
relevant is that it states there are a couple of pages in conflict. I chose
to overwrite those files on the web server with those being published from my
computer. Every time I tried this the error appeared.
So instead I chose to ignore and noticed that this time it successfully
published some new picture files I had just added.

I thought therefore that somehow the other web pages in conflict were
perhaps corrupt and thus the cause of the issue, so I removed them from the
web server (by logging in to the web server) and then when publishing it now
states unmatched. However, the error still happens but surprisingly (what I
hadn't noticed before) is that the web pages are actually being published
(checked on the web server and they are now there). They however now appear
as in conflict again on the web site tab page.

I then created a new web paged and published that. As above, the error
appeared though the page is actually published successfully but now shows as
in conflict in FP even though it is a brand new web page.
I then tested this with image files. These publish successfully without the
error.

So to sum up, it seems I can publish successfully for all file types, though
for web pages even though they are transferred to the web server, the error
appears on publishing and they state that they are in conflict.
