Publish Web not working on new PC

Ian Trusson

Just changed to a new PC with FrontPage 2002 and Office 2003 installed. On
the old PC I was using FrontPage 2002 and Office 2002 with no problem. Now
when I go Publish Web, after a 30sec delay, I get the FrontPage error
message:

"Could not find a web server at 'www.newburycameraclub.or.uk' on port 21.
Please check to make sure that the web server name is valid and your proxy
settings are set correctly. If you are sure everything is correct, the web
server may be temporarily out of service."

The server name is unchanged. I am not using a proxy server. I have two web
sites with different hosts and they both show this same problem.

Any ideas of what to do?

Regards, Ian

Allow your firewall to allow FP to access port 21.
put fpage.exe (or whatever the FP executable program file is) in your
exceptions list.

Thanks. You are right that it is a firewall problem because 'Publish Web'
works fine with windows xp firewall disabled.

I tried allowing my firewall to access port 21. I also browsed for fpage.exe
and added it to the exceptions list but still got the same delay and error
message.

You would think the firewall would put out a message to help?

Can you think of any other firewall settings to try or do I just have to
disable it every time I 'Publish Web'?

Port 21 is the FTP port. Are you using FTP, or http publish, which is port
80?

I am publishing from within FrontPage with the 'Publish Web' command using
FTP.

In my firewall it's frontpg.exe

I don't use xp's firewall but you should be able to view a log somewhere and see what's blocked then just enable allow for frontpage.

Rob,

Yes the FrontPage File name in the C:/Program Files/Microsoft Office
directory is named FRONTPG.EXE and that is what I browsed to and added to
the exception list in the Windows XP Firewall, but that was not the
solution, unfortunately.

However, I thought it strange that Microsoft FrontPage was not listed in the
'add a program' list in the firewall. I would have expected the list to
include all installed programs, but I had to use the browse feature to find
FRONTPG.EXE.

I think this is going to be a difficult problem to solve!

I receive the same errors with FP 2003 uploading to my ISP (Unix based
server). They monitored my transactions & found that FP was attempting to
open multiple, simultaneous FTP ports (only 2 are allowed by my ISP). This
immediately generates the 'Port 21' error. The error ONLY seems to happen
when 'Remote Web Site Properties' is set to: 'determine changes by comparing
source and destination sites'
I have not found a solution yet... perhaps this info may act as a clue?
G.
