Hello All,
Have been given a Viglen Genie P3 650MHz, 10Gb Hd, 256Mb RAM. It's been crunching for a few days and takes about 24 hours to complete a task. The main point about it is the 200W temperature-controlled PSU - it is so quiet. Since it is in my shed on a wired network this is of no importance, but I would like to know the cost of a similar psu to run my AMD Sempron 3400+, Asrock K8NF4G, 1GB RAM, 40Gb HD which lves in my bedroom. It currently has an EBUYER 500W PSU which sound like a hairdryer.
Any advice very welcome,
Cheers,
peahouse05 :)

There are loads of quiet/silent PSU's out there mate, search around.
One thing I will say is - don't buy cheapest and check the spec includes thermal protection!
I bought a PSU for an old PC (cos it went bang! hehe).. I replaced it with the cheapest I could find - which had a reputation for overheating... it had no thermal protection, so fried CPU's (literally!)

This could be "ideal" information for you Peahouse. ;)

Thanks for the replies guys. Now there are two reasons to change fear of failure as well as noise on my Ebuyer psu.
Will check out all the links.

Thanks Me__2001,
Have looked at all the types suggested by members but a bit too expensive for retired and tight. Might take a chance on an Ebuyer 12cm 400W, which, in theory, should reduce the speed by a half.

I would not take a 'chance' on a PSU ... you can get an Enermax, with speed control, quite cheap ... seek and ye shall find.

Hello All,
Have now read some stuff on Enermax PSUs - everything I need. My question is, what power output do I need for my AMD 3400, KN84G MB, 40Gb HD, 1GB RAM with a CD-ROM? It is only used on the Net and for crunching.
Thanks in advance,
peahouse05:)

Thanks Mucks,
Have not seen this site before but it suggests that the PSU from the Viglen PC I have been given would be ok (200W) for my AMD 3400 rig.
Have extended my wired network to the garden shed, where noisy PCs may crunch in peace.
Cheers,
peahouse05:)

ps Have installed Slackware on Viglen in shed but not got it crunching yet (LNOP on TV). Do I qualify for 'Mad Linux User'?

Apply here anytime you like, just ask to have your name added to my list ... your number would be "insane Linux user # 005" ... ;)

I would get something in the 350-450 range for your 3400 ... no PSU will be able to run at it's advertised peek, a 200 would die very young ... be reminded that the PCCalculator is used as a way of finding a minimum requirment. Remember also, it's a numbers game.

Hello All,
Read a good review on Vantec Stealth Aluminium 420W PSU and ordered one. Thought .....three temperature-controlled fans can't be bad and there was a full test on the review.
Hope this impulse buy is ok!
Cheers,
