Our setup is PS2 to laptop with wireless from laptop to
ADSL modem. We have other home PCs but they connect to
the ADSL modem separately and are in a separate windows
network - I couldn't find a way to get all of the PCs to
talk to each other and have the PS2 on the network so if
my son needs to print from his laptop he emails it to me
and I print it on another PC!
If this sounds vaguely familiar then read on.
Hardware: Connect the PS2 via a crossover network cable
to the LAN port on the laptop. The crossover cable is
important, normal cables are straight and won't work.
Apart from the LAN port the laptop needs another network
or dial-up adapter to connect to the Internet. In my
son's case this is a wireless adapter to our ADSL
modem/router but I guess it will work with any adapter
that connects to the Internet.
Setup: Set-up the PS2 first using the CD that came with
the network adapter. I can't remember all of the steps
but think we accepted the default (auto) settings for
most choices (I used the rule that if I don't understand
it I don't change it). Have the PS2 try to test the
connection and whilst it is testing (the PS2 only makes
its networtk adapter live when it is needed) run the
network setup wizard in windows XP. Again, I can't
remember all of the steps but you need to ensure you
choose the correct network adapter for Internet so the
other one that connects to your PS2 is chosen for your
LAN. You can have the network wizard enable the firewall
on your internet connection as this does not seem to stop
the PS2 from working OK.
If you get it right you will end up with two network
connections on the laptop: one from the PS2 (with IP
address 192.168.0.1) and one shared to the Internet (with
a different address obtained from your modem or ISP).
If you get a network bridge delete the bridge 'cos this
doesn't seem to work. You will then need to share the
network connection in the direction of the Internet.
I'm sorry if I can't remember all of the details but if
you get stuck on a particular step post here again and
I'll tell you how I answered when I set it up.
