PS/2 keyboard/mouse issues

I'm currently servicing another user's computer. This computer is an older
one, P3 500, 320 Mb RAM, 9 Gb HDD. For some odd reason during the bootup
process just before the Welcome screen the PS/2 keyboard and mouse turn off.
I can use a USB keyboard/mouse but I want to be able to use the PS/2 ones. I
know that the keyboard and mouse work, since I can get to BIOS and select
boot settings and they also work when I use safe mode. I have a feeling it's
a setting in one of the boot processes but I'm not sure as to how to change
it. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried uninstalling the USB root hub and on the
restart my mouse/keyboard worked, however when the driver for the USB root
hub was reinstalled it stopped working again. The device listing for the USB
hub is "Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller". That device
I have found is what is preventing the keyboard and mouse from working. I
disabled that device and, of course, the on-board USB ports aren't working.
Now if I could only get both devices instead of one or the other working life
would be good. I'll see if there's an upgraded driver on the intel site but
again I ask for any suggestions that you may have concerning this slightly
more developed issue.
