I didn't plug into the wrong ports, I'm not that dumb. I doubt it was
a driver issue since the mouse worked but the keyboard didn't. But it
doesn't matter either way because I've given away my friend the 2006
computer and he's trashing his old one.

Don't be so quick to take offense at any computer related problem fixes.
The keyboard & mouse stopped working suddenly after a couple of years (maybe
after an minor upgrade or something, can't remember but nothing to do with
mobo or mouse & kb) on my 1998 Dell (used to be my wife's). Out of
frustration (& desperation because my wife would be awake in a few hours), I
reversed the plugs (mouse into keyboard jack, keyboard into mouse jack) &
voila, everything worked. For years it had to be hooked up that way. A few
years a go, I inherited it & maxed it out with parts around the office &
added a cheap Slot 1 upgrade that tripled the processor speed. One day it
suddenly occurred to me that the mouse & keyboard connectors now go to their
proper slots.
I ask a question on this forum & if the experts say "put the parts in a bag
& swing them around your head", I try it.
Go figure?!?
