USB Devices won't work in Windows

Hello, I've recently set up a new system. It's using a Biostar motherboard
(VIA Chipset), and running XP Pro.

I've got a generic USB mouse and keyboard - Neither have drivers.

I can navigate BIOS fine with the keyboard, but once Windows loads, any
lights (Scroll Lock, Caps Lock, Num Lock) go out and the keyboard is
unresponsive - A PS/2 keyboard works, however. I lack a USB -> PS/2 dongle
right now, so I can't use a mouse - I'm forced to use mousekeys and the PS/2
keyboard.

USB drivers have been installed, all USB settings in the BIOS are correct,
and in device manager, all USB ports / controllers are marked as functional.

The USB mouse and keyboard, on the other hand, are marked as "This device is
not configured correctly. (Code 1)"

I use a USB wireless card on that system, which has its own drivers, and it
works fine - I can load web pages without issue.

Any insight into my problem is muchly appreciated.

Code 1 indicates that you do not have the correct driver installed for the
device. Try the search for a new driver on the Windows Update page. You can
get there from Start/All Programs/Windows Update.

In Device Manager, each item (The mouse, and the keyboard) has two entries.
One entry is marked Code 1, the other Code 28. Windows Update found drivers
for the keyboard, but they are incorrect and thusly don't work.

As with most newer motherboards, XP may not have the correct drivers
to configure the complete "access" to the motherboard devices. After
installing the base XP, you need to always install / update the
drivers, including the motherboard drivers which are commonly known as
"chipset" drivers. Take a look at:

http://www.viaarena.com/

and "Download" the chipset drivers that you need.

You say setting up a new computer. Some computers use dedicated USB hubs for
the mouse and keyboard. Are you sure yours does not?

I'm positive.

In fact, I attached my DSLR today, and it worked flawlessly - Was instantly
detected as a USB mass storage device. It's just the input devices that don't
work.
