Protecting your anti-virus scanner

I have two anti-virus scanners. Mcafee and AVG antivirus. Seems like
there's a virus in AVG because I just tried to scan with it and it
stopped like 15GB into the scan and asked me if I wanted to move the
virus's I've found sofar into the virus vault, when I did it crashed.
I scanned with Mcafee Online and found a few virus's and
deleted them, however AVG reminds me constantly of some virus's that
are on my computer, but I don't think McAfee will get them since it
heuristically finds them rather than having hard and solid virus
definitions. And as far as I know McAfee can't be infected with a
virus because it's online rather than on my computer, I prefer
something that has virus definitions, I want to get AVG fixed so it
doesn't crash, are there any scanners that are online and have virus
definitions, and that you don't have to pay for updates, etc?

System restore? AVG keeps telling me I have a virus named Hantanner, I
scanned with Macafee online last night and the only virus it found was
Jsnoclose and I think it mentioned restore (it had me go there and
turn it off) I think since Macafee is pure heuristic and doesn't have
virus definitions that it's not finding the virus's avg mentions like
hantanner, etc.
