McAfee crashes

Hi.
When trying to scan my computer for viruses, McAfee Virus-scan (v10)
crashes. I have tried using McAfee's online scanner, and this makes IE
crash. Windows defender also crashes when doing a system scan. I am
suspecting something is stopping my system scans from operating
correctly, but I can't tell if there's a virus because none of the
scans work. Could anyone help me with this problem?

Assuming you are NOT using Win9x/ME...

Dump the contents of the IE Temporary Internet Folder cache (TIF)

start --> settings --> control panel --> internet options --> delete files

Open a Command Prompt.

In the Command Prompt type the following...

CHKDSK C: /F

If it replies..
"Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.
Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?
(Y/N)"

Choose - Y

type; EXIT

Reboot the PC.

A full Check Disk will want to be performed, allow it.

When it reboots, perform a defragmentation of the hard disk.

You can get to the Defragmenting program easily by executing; dfrg.msc

Start --> run ->
type; dfrg.msc

I've done everything you've said, but when performing a VirusScan it
still crashes.
It displays the error: McAfee HTML dialog has encountered a problem and
need to close etc.

What should I do now?

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help

Also, if the scans still crash during safe mode, try running safe-mode
with command prompt. If something has hooked itself using explorer,
most of the time this method will prevent the piece of malware from
loading.

I've also got a utility up as well, if you want to use it.

Also, if the scans still crash during safe mode, try running safe-mode
with command prompt. If something has hooked itself using explorer,
most of the time this method will prevent the piece of malware from
loading.

I actually chatted to McAfee support yesterday and they told me to
delete some reigstry entries and unsinstall. This seems to have stopped
the problem. Thanks to everyone who helped though, it has been really
useful.
