I have XP pro and Word 2003, running on P4-,80 gb hard drive, and had
recently professionally installed a 1gig of ram as the system was slowing
down.
Befor this ram increase, the system ran well, except very very occasionaly
, I could not type using the keyboard- the cursor would blink but not accpt
typing-nor could I move the mouse -this occured at start up when I was
prompted to give password. I would turn of the computor restart and I was
able to type the password and use all command/ sytem with no problems.

However since the upgrade, the system hangs- the best way I can describe it
is as if the keybourd and mouse conecctions had been unplugged, and I was
trying to type and move the mouse, I have to switch of the power and
restart. It may then operate for 40 minutes or 10 minutes before it freezes
again

I brought a new LCD screen but have reverted back to the Benq console. The
LCD would come up with a out of range signal when the freeze to place, a
error message appeared suggesting that a driver upgrade be installed, I have
installed Catalyst 1, but the problem still occurs

I have uninstalled all programs such as register mechanic-secure IE and
poppup stopper, with only McFee Anti Virus, Microsoft Spyware and Google as a
search
engines

I have taken the system back to the tech and he has replaced the ram on 2
occassions. But he is unable to locate the problem as it has not froze on
him, intially the BSOD appaeared and a error log was generated. BC error code
from 1 to 4 was shown. BCp1 842BF9e8 B2 85617008 BC3 854bc108 BC4
00000001
OSV 5-1-2600 Product 256<1SP 2-0

All updates ,service packs for XP Word Windows are current.

All the connections at the back of the tower have been checked and are ok, I
have replaced the actual power cord. I have replaced the optical mouse, with
a belkin wireless but the problem persists

The freezes can occur in any program- visisting the web, accessing gmail or
using word. I use word alot to do assignments and reports and use atuo
recover as a safe guard, this is set to recover every minutes to avoid loss
of info

Any assistance would be extremley grateful

My opinion is that your power supply was/is marginal. You added new hardware
which requires more watts and your system gets problems. It's like you put
it over the edge.

When you cold boot everything starts up at once for the first time and that
requires all the power to get your system up and running. When you reboot
that stuff is already running (or a good part of it) so not as much is
required of your PSU.

When you use a program it draws more on your CPU which needs more power to
go faster and you're using more RAM. Seems the PSU isn't supplying enough
power "no matter what program you use."

Swapping in a better quality power supply should let you know right away if
that's the problem (you have all the symptoms).

You should get an Antec or Enermax brand (there are other known good brands,
but these are commonly available) and as far over 400 watts as you can
afford. There are 300W PSUs that work better than many 500W units as some
mfrs. use wishful thinking.

There's a label on the side of your power supply. The +3V column should
equal no less than 24A and the +5V column no less than 30A and higher is
better. The TCO (Total Combined Output) of those two should be 220W or
higher. With these figures you can go back to your tech and you'll know if
he has a power supply that should work for you, or go to Best Buy or CompUSA
and take your machine or not as they have no problem with you returning if
that isn't the problem.

Good luck.
