I have Windows XP home edition. Have had new system since April '03. Most
everything running relatively smoothly. Yesterday, when logged on (as
administrator), opened up email and Internet Explorer, neither program
showed window in taskbar. When I minimized program, they disappeared. The
task manager shows that programs are running, but are not shown on taskbar -
and I can switch to program I need. When I log on as guest or other user,
everything operates properly - programs show up in taskbar. I've used
Symantec virus scan (from website) and housecall.antivirus.com website to
scan for viruses. Both found nothing. I've searched help & support through
Microsoft, but alas, found nothing matching my problem. It doesn't matter
what programs I have running, none show in taskbar.

Help please!! Very frustrating moving between programs using CTRL + ALT +
DEL, or ALT + TAB for that matter.

I have the same problem as you. But when I press Alt+Tab
the taskbar icon pops up, as if it just opened. It
doesn't happen often, but it more of an annoyance that an
issue as it fixes itself for me. I have XP Pro with SP1
and all the updates. Maybe it's XP Pro that fixes itself
or something in the updates?

It seems as you ever have your taskbar on auto hide which
can be changed via the taskbar properties. If this is the
problem when you move your mouse as far down as possible
the taskbar will appear, right click on it and go to
properties and un tick auto hide taskbar.
You may have also minimised your taskbar. To fix this
move your mouse to the bottom and try and drag up a
blue/grey or other coloured looking line
