Programs do not populate taskbar

On switching on my XP Pro PC this afternoon I found my
taskbar had become 'hidden'. This has been a spontaneous
occurence.
Now, on loading programs they do not populate the taskbar
although ALT + TAB works to change between programs.
Still, I like to be able to click the buttons.

Try starting your computer in safe mode and then just restart to normal
mode. Taskbar issues can be usually solved by that.
