Pop-up help obscured by Taskbar

Terry Pinnell

On my newly-installed XP Pro PC, a short while into a session I keep
finding that when I hover over an item in my Taskbar the yellow pop-up
description is almost hidden behind the Taskbar.

Under Properties I have all these checked

Lock the taskbar
Keep the taskbar on top of other windows
Group similar taskbar buttons
Show Quick Launch

and this is unchecked
Auto-hide the taskbar

Don't recall seeing this before on my old XP Home PC, with same
settings.

It seems from your description that what you refer to as "pop-up" is
"tool tips". If so, it is a very old problem with Windows-XP. Do the
following to make the tool-tips visible again:
Right-click on an empty space in the Taskbar, and open "Properties".
Uncheck "Auto-hide the Taskbar", and "Apply".
Check "Auto-hide the Taskbar", and "Apply".
This should remove the eclipsing of tooltips by the taskbar, but it
can happen again.

Kelly's fix:
Go to Start/All Programs: Hover over any program listed, right click and
select Sort by Name. Repeat once more.

In continuation of my previous post: Try also unchecking and re-
checking "keep the taskbar on top of other windows".

A long standing Windows bug that was not finally fixed until Vista. The
problem results from switching windows. The previous windows sometimes does
not yield focus correctly. Logging off and on again is another way to clear
it.

Thanks all. After trying the various suggestions and a few others, the
problem keeps returning intermittently. Looks like it's the bug Colin
described.

I have had the same problem but was never able to solve it in a manner that
I can remember. However, I am not experiencing the problem at the present
time. I have your same options checked except for "Show Quick Launch". Dont
know if that is making a difference.

Terry,
There are a bunch of fixes out there for that problem. I ended up
getting a little program called Tool
Tip Manager (http://tooltipmanager.com). It works perfectly, it's
automatic, and it does not require you to have a separate process
running all the time like some others. You change the font, colors,
and auto-hide time-out too.

Good luck,

Jasen
